Viralling of a Banner Prohibiting Bread for Afghan Migrants in Tehran
Meanwhile, some public reports indicate that recently some bakeries in the city of Qom have been deducting more money than the government-approved rate from the bank cards of Afghan migrants
Mohajir Times: Recently, a notice banning the sale of bread to Afghan immigrants was viralled, which is said to be related to the city of Tehran. On this banner behind the window of a bakery, it is written: “We Have No Bread for Afghans!”
Arsheh Online Media also wrote that the publication of an image of a notice on the window of a bakery in Tehran regarding the prohibition of selling bread to Afghan nationals has sparked controversy on social media.
Afghan immigrants have previously witnessed such incidents where bakeries took steps to ban the sale of bread to migrants. For instance, in 2021, news of the prohibition of selling bread to Afghan nationals residing in the village of Hajiabad in the Arak province was reported. According to the explanation in the posted notice, “This decision was made by the Islamic Council of the village due to the cessation of flour subsidies for foreign nationals.”
This action caused significant controversy on social media and news outlets. Following the installation of that banner, the proconsul of Arak announced that “The village headman and related individuals in the Islamic Council of Hajiabad have been referred to the Disciplinary Board, and the prohibition of bread for migrants no longer exists.”
Meanwhile, some public reports indicate that recently some bakeries in the city of Qom have been deducting more money than the government-approved rate from the bank cards of Afghan migrants. Some of them told Mohajir Times that when they raised the issue with the bakery directors, they ultimately did not receive a satisfactory response.
At the same time, some news media, including publications named like Faraz and Tabnak, have recently published unsubstantiated and provocative reports against Afghan migrants. Immigration activists believe that such media behavior can tarnish the credibility and ethics of a news outlet.
