On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, hundreds of students in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, attacked the Rohingya refugee camp in the western part of the country, forcing them to leave this temporary shelter. Since early November of the current year, more than 1,500 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have arrived on the shores of the Aceh province in western Indonesia.
The United Nations Refugee Agency states that this is the largest wave of Rohingya refugee migration in the past eight years. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the refugee affairs, has expressed concerns about the security of these refugees through a statement. Indonesia has not signed the United Nations Convention on Refugees, and in recent weeks, various campaigns have been launched in the country to expel Rohingya refugees.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights in refugee affairs considers the attack on Myanmar refugees in Indonesia the result of a "Coordinated" campaign based on "Misinformation and Spreading Hate."
In a video released by the AFP_depicting the attack on the refugee camp, the protesters, in addition to clashing with the police and burning tires, also damaged the personal belongings of the refugees.
