Reports Indicate an Attack on Afghan Migrants in Eastern Tehran
An Afghan migrant from eastern Tehran wrote that he and his family feel they are living in a siege and do not dare to leave their home for work or shopping
According to Mohajir Times, citing Afghanistan International, following the news of the death of an Iranian citizen in a confrontation with three Afghan migrants, several migrants in Tehran have reported widespread mistreatment of Afghans in eastern Tehran.
Last week, it was reported that an Iranian citizen was killed following an altercation with three Afghan migrants who had previously visited his brother's apartment to collect maintenance fees. Now, several Afghan migrants from eastern Tehran have written to Afghanistan International, stating that in recent days, locals in parks, streets, and metro stations in the area have been attacking Afghan migrants.
An Afghan migrant from eastern Tehran wrote that he and his family feel they are living in a siege and do not dare to leave their home for work or shopping. Another audience from the 15th district of Tehran (where the confrontation occurred) sent a notice warning Afghan migrants to leave the area immediately. The notice, whose source is unknown, warns Afghan migrants that if they do not leave the 15th district soon, they will be forcibly expelled from Iran.
Additionally, videos of street clashes have been sent to Afghanistan International, which cannot be verified at this time. Last week, the Tasnim news agency reported that following the death of an Iranian citizen in a hospital emergency room, the capital police arrested three Afghan brothers on suspicion of involvement in the fatal injury.
The news agency, quoting a woman to whose apartment the three migrant workers had come, wrote: “My husband left Tehran for a work mission, and I was alone at home. These three brothers, who are our neighbors, came to collect building maintenance fees. A verbal altercation ensued due to building issues.”
The woman, who accused the three migrant workers of using foul language, said that after they left, she contacted her husband, and an hour later, her brother-in-law went to confront the three workers, resulting in a physical altercation.
Iranian media, including the Tasnim news agency, wrote that this 28-year-old man was injured in the chest during the argument with the three Afghan workers and later died in the hospital. However, details about who started the confrontation and how it led to the Iranian man's injury have not been released. In recent months, there has been a wave of criticism of Afghan migrants' presence in various Iranian cities on social media and in the press.
Two days ago, following the murder of an Iranian man reportedly killed by his Afghan restaurant apprentice over a dispute, residents of the city of Khorr in Fars province attacked migrants' homes and set several houses on fire.
Meanwhile, Iranian media, quoting Tehran police, reported the arrest of 10 Afghan citizens accused of “stabbing on the streets” of the city. This arrest occurred amid clashes over the expulsion of Afghan migrants from Iran. Not much information has been released about the conditions of these individuals' detention.
